Dr. Igwe Arua Obasi

Dr. Igwe Arua Obasi is a Consultant Paediatric and Minimal Access Surgeon at
Evercare Hospital Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. He is widely recognized for his
pioneering work in minimally invasive paediatric surgery, introducing several
groundbreaking laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures in the region.
His dedication to innovation has positioned him as a leading figure in paediatric
surgical advancements in Nigeria and West Africa.
Dr. Igwe obtained his MBBS degree from the University of Nigeria,
Nsukka in March 2009 and completed his internship at the University of
Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu. During his residency, he developed a
strong interest in minimally invasive surgery under the mentorship of Prof.
Adisa, a respected laparoscopic general surgeon. Encouraged by mentors including
Prof. Adejuyigbe and Prof. Sowande, he became the first resident in West Africa
to complete a dissertation focused on laparoscopic surgery in children.
His landmark research, “Comparative Study of Laparoscopic and Open
Inguinal Herniotomy in Children in Ile Ife, Nigeria: A Prospective Randomized
Trial”, has been published in the Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical
Techniques. This study helped lay the foundation for the broader adoption of
minimally invasive procedures in paediatric surgery across the region.
Since joining Evercare Hospital in March 2021, Dr. Igwe has successfully
performed numerous first-of-its-kind surgeries in Nigeria and West Africa.
These include the first laparoscopic pyeloplasty in a 6-month-old, thoracoscopic
repair of type C oesophageal atresia, and single-stage thoracoscopic repair
of long-gap oesophageal atresia in a preterm neonate. He has also led innovations
in thoracoscopic lobectomy for CPAM and laparoscopic repair of jejunal atresia,
among others.
Dr. Igwe continues to be a driving force for excellence in paediatric surgery,
combining clinical skill with academic rigor. His work is shaping the future of
surgical care for children in Africa and inspiring the next generation of
paediatric surgeons through research, mentorship, and clinical leadership.
