Dr. Igwe Arua Obasi

MBBS, Consultant Paediatric and Minimal Access Surgeon

Dr. Igwe Arua Obasi is a Consultant Paediatric and Minimal Access Surgeon at Evercare Hospital Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. He is widely recognized for his pioneering work in minimally invasive paediatric surgery, introducing several groundbreaking laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures in the region. His dedication to innovation has positioned him as a leading figure in paediatric surgical advancements in Nigeria and West Africa.

Dr. Igwe obtained his MBBS degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in March 2009 and completed his internship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu. During his residency, he developed a strong interest in minimally invasive surgery under the mentorship of Prof. Adisa, a respected laparoscopic general surgeon. Encouraged by mentors including Prof. Adejuyigbe and Prof. Sowande, he became the first resident in West Africa to complete a dissertation focused on laparoscopic surgery in children.

His landmark research, “Comparative Study of Laparoscopic and Open Inguinal Herniotomy in Children in Ile Ife, Nigeria: A Prospective Randomized Trial”, has been published in the Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical Techniques. This study helped lay the foundation for the broader adoption of minimally invasive procedures in paediatric surgery across the region.

Since joining Evercare Hospital in March 2021, Dr. Igwe has successfully performed numerous first-of-its-kind surgeries in Nigeria and West Africa. These include the first laparoscopic pyeloplasty in a 6-month-old, thoracoscopic repair of type C oesophageal atresia, and single-stage thoracoscopic repair of long-gap oesophageal atresia in a preterm neonate. He has also led innovations in thoracoscopic lobectomy for CPAM and laparoscopic repair of jejunal atresia, among others.

Dr. Igwe continues to be a driving force for excellence in paediatric surgery, combining clinical skill with academic rigor. His work is shaping the future of surgical care for children in Africa and inspiring the next generation of paediatric surgeons through research, mentorship, and clinical leadership.
